What Happens If You Take Viagra and Don’t Have Sex?

Have you ever found yourself in a position where you’ve taken Viagra without sex?

Picture the scene: you’re planning some bedtime action with your partner, you take Viagra, then they call to tell you they’re working late.

You’re frustrated, sure, but the good news is the Viagra shouldn’t be a problem.

Does Viagra automatically give you an erection?

Viagra helps to increase the blood flow to the penis by widening the blood vessels. The increased blood supply helps you get and maintain an erection.

A common misconception of Viagra is that it’s a magic pill that does all the work for you. Some people think that once you take Viagra you get a continuous erection. That’s not the case. In order for Viagra to be effective, you need to be sexually stimulated or aroused.

Taking Viagra doesn’t automatically guarantee an erection. Sexual stimulation is key.

And if you take Viagra without sex?

If you’ve taken Viagra and don’t have sex, relax. It’s quite common.

There are any number of reasons why plans change. Something might come up and you have to go out, a visitor could arrive at your house, or maybe you just decide you’re not up for it anymore.

The tablet is unlikely to have an effect on you.

You need to be aroused and sexually stimulated for Viagra to be effective. If you decide not to have sex, you’re unlikely to get an erection because of the lack of sexual stimulation.

You may still experience some of the milder side effects of Viagra, such as:

  • Flushing of the face
  • Headaches
  • Upset stomach
  • Dizziness

These effects usually go away quickly on their own. You can take paracetamol for headaches or an indigestion remedy for an upset stomach if you need to.

Can you take another tablet later?

You can only take one Viagra tablet in 24 hours, regardless of whether you had sex or not.

Viagra stays in the blood for 24 hours. Taking more than the prescribed quantity can lead to more serious side effects.

The most serious side effect of taking too much Viagra is priapism. This is when an erection lasts longer than four hours. It can be painful and is not linked to arousal. If this happens, you would need to seek medical help immediately. Priapism can lead to permanent damage if not treated quickly enough.

Other serious side effects of too much Viagra include:

  • Chest pains
  • Heart palpitations
  • Low blood press

You should always seek medical advice as soon as possible if you think you have overdosed on Viagra.

Only take one tablet in 24 hours even if you took Viagra without sex.

Summary

You don’t need to worry if you’ve taken Viagra without sex. You’re unlikely to get an erection without arousal or sexual stimulation. You may experience mild side effects but these will fade quickly.

Just remember you can’t take another tablet for 24 hours. This could lead to more serious side effects and you would need to seek medical attention immediately.
