Ocean Acidification
The IOCCP, in strong collaboration with the NOAA Ocean Acidification Program, the Global Ocean Observing System, the Ocean Acidification International Coordination Center and other institutional and programmatic partners worldwide , works towards the development of a Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON) which will address the requirements of nations affected by this emerging environmental problem in the context of an overall Framework for Ocean Observing. In order to document the status and progress of ocean acidification in open-ocean and coastal environments it is necessary to develop a coordinated multidisciplinary approach of observations which will facilitate the development of our capability to predict present-day and future responses of marine biota, ecosystem processes, biogeochemistry, and climate change feedbacks.
The existing global marine carbon observing network of repeat hydrographic surveys, time-series stations, floats and glider observations, and volunteer observing ships in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans can provide a strong foundation of observations of the carbonate chemistry needed to address the problem of ocean acidification. Enhancing these activities and expanding the global time-series network with new carbon and pH sensors on floats and gliders will provide important information on the changing conditions in both open-ocean and coastal environments that are presently under-sampled.
As coordinating observing efforts and providing support to data management teams are the core mission of our Project, the principal IOCCP tasks in the GOA-ON are: (i) to help design the components and locations of the global ocean acidification observing network including existing observing networks wherever possible; (ii) to help identify measurement parameters and performance metrics for each major component of the observing system, and (iii) to help develop strategy for data quality assurance, storage and distribution.
