Viagra Vision Loss Symptoms

Viagra Vision Problem Lawyers.
Viagra is one of the most well known pharmaceutical drugs on the planet. It has been used by more than 35 million people, promoted by a former presidential candidate, mentioned on late night talk shows, and it even has a nickname – the “little blue pill.” Along with its fame as the leading pharmaceutical treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED), Viagra has also become well known for a range of side effects, including severely blurred vision and sudden vision loss.
Viagra’s manufacturer, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, has faced many lawsuits filed by people who have been injured by this drug, including a class action filed on behalf of an estimated 24 million men. Our Viagra side effect lawyers at Farah & Farah are currently investigating Viagra injury cases nationwide.
Viagra and Vision Problems.
As stated in an article on Vision Web, it is well documented that Viagra can cause retinal dysfunction that lasts for several hours after the drug is taken. Common symptoms include:
Blurred vision Sensitivity to light Bluish tint or haze to the vision.
Viagra is available in different doses, and the higher the dosage, the greater the risk of side effects. Ocular side effects occur in approximately:
3% of men taking 25 to 50 mg 11% of men taking 100 mg 50% of men taking 200 mg Virtually all men taking 600 to 800 mg.
Sildenafil (Viagra) is effective for treating ED because it inhibits PDE-5, an enzyme that enhances the effects of nitric oxide, which relaxes the smooth muscle of the penis and facilitates blood flow. Unfortunately, it also inhibits PDE-6, an enzyme present in photoreceptors of the retina. Inhibition of this enzyme affects the eyes and causes light sensitivity and “blue vision.”
Viagra and NAION.
Viagra has also been found to cause non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) – a condition in which blood flow to the optic nerve is blocked. FDA updated labeling for Viagra (as well as for ED drugs Levitra and Cialis) based on post-marketing reports of sudden vision loss attributed to NAION caused by these drugs.
In its press release about this alarming Viagra side effect, FDA advises patients who experience sudden vision loss or decreased vision in one or both eyes to stop taking the drug and call a doctor right away. FDA also warns that patients who have suffered NAION once have an increased risk of developing this condition again. According to a study reported in the International Journal of Clinical Practice, FDA updated Viagra prescribing information to state that NAION, a cause of decreased vision including permanent loss of vision, has been reported in association with the use of Viagra and other PDE-5 inhibitors.
