Viagra and Vision Problems.

Viagra is available in different doses, and the higher the dosage, the greater the risk of side effects. Ocular side effects occur in approximately:

Sildenafil (Viagra) is effective for treating ED because it inhibits PDE-5, an enzyme that enhances the effects of nitric oxide, which relaxes the smooth muscle of the penis and facilitates blood flow. Unfortunately, it also inhibits PDE-6, an enzyme present in photoreceptors of the retina. Inhibition of this enzyme affects the eyes and causes light sensitivity and “blue vision.”
Viagra and NAION.
Viagra has also been found to cause non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) – a condition in which blood flow to the optic nerve is blocked. FDA updated labeling for Viagra (as well as for ED drugs Levitra and Cialis) based on post-marketing reports of sudden vision loss attributed to NAION caused by these drugs.
In its press release about this alarming Viagra side effect, FDA advises patients who experience sudden vision loss or decreased vision in one or both eyes to stop taking the drug and call a doctor right away. FDA also warns that patients who have suffered NAION once have an increased risk of developing this condition again. According to a study reported in the International Journal of Clinical Practice, FDA updated Viagra prescribing information to state that NAION, a cause of decreased vision including permanent loss of vision, has been reported in association with the use of Viagra and other PDE-5 inhibitors.
