I recently returned from a three-week vacation in Seattle, Washington with a sharp pain in my neck and lower back. The problem was probably caused by sitting in a cramped seat on the last leg of my flight or from hauling my three heavy bags around at the airport. Anyway after three days the pain didn’t go away, so while I was doing some banking in San Jose I went to a pharmacy where I have been buying medicine for years. The employees know me and always manage to prescribe something that gives me relief. I took the pills they sold me and woke up the next day with a lot less pain and discomfort.
Pharmacies in Costa Rica are known as farmacias. There are scores of pharmacies all over the country, especially in the larger cities and towns. In San José, for example, it seems like there is a pharmacy on every corner. They are all very well stocked and offer a variety of products other than medicines such as baby formula, deodorants, shampoos, vitamins, diapers etc. The good thing about the pharmacies here is that you can buy almost anything like birth control, Viagra, and even injections of many drugs over the counter. The exceptions are antibiotics, narcotics, or psychotropic drugs. All of the latter require a special prescription form a doctor. If a retired American or another person can’t find a specific medicine all that has to be done is to consult a guide that has all of the equivalent medicines one might take as well as some generic versions.
Pharmacists here have to have some limited medical training which enables them to prescribe the right medicines for most common symptoms and ailments. However, in some cases it is much better to see a doctor first instead of trying to treat an illness yourself. The Costa Ricans tend to self-medicate and overuse pharmaceutical drugs which may lead to serious complications in some cases.
Retirees can save money by going directly to a local pharmacy if they want to refill medications or treat a simple illness. Some medicines are less expensive in Costa Rica while others may be slightly higher. We even have some products which are not allowed or permitted in the U.S. and a lot of them are very effective. Retirees and others should know that there is huge difference in prices from one pharmacy to another, even if they are the same chain. In areas that are more touristy or wealthy areas, pharmacies are significantly more expensive.
Two of the biggest pharmacy chains in Costa Rica are Sucre and Fishel. The Clínica Bílica Hospital has a 24-hour pharmacy which offers home delivery.

You cannot send u.s. controled substances from c.r., legally.
Certain Farmacias will do this through regular mail. Maybe it gets there, maybe it won’t.
Doctors come early to a wedding-feast, and when over-fed and tired go their way saying that all feasts are a violation and all feasters rulebreakers. Hahah!
In San José I bought Viagra in a street pharmacy at $1 a pil. Here in NJI need to do a stress test to get a prescription and the pay 10 fold.

Can I purchase over the counter Xanax in San Jose Costa Rica. I am coming tomrw but haven’t had time to fill my prescription and I will be sick with out it as well as very anxious.
Now strictly controlled in Costa Rica and not available without a prescription…
