The www.SirBillyWright.com website is dedicated to one of football’s greatest ever ambassadors, William Ambrose Wright CBE, who was known to us all as Billy Wright. During his career he won an amazing 105 full international caps playing for England, captaining the team a world record 90 times, playing in a world record 70 consecutive international matches and captaining it to a record 3 World Cup Finals (1950, 1954 and 1958). In addition, he played in 5 Victory Internationals, 21 Inter-League Internationals, 4 England Xl internationals and 1 game for the Rest of the UK… a total of 136 senior international matches. Remarkably he achieved this in just 13 seasons (1946-59), his career having been cut short by 7 full seasons, as a consequence of his serving in the British Army as a sergeant during World War 2. Furthermore, in Billy’s day there were no substitutes and a cap was awarded for a full game, unlike today, where a player can gain a cap even for coming on briefly in a game.

In the 50 years since he retired from football, only 4 other players have ever passed the 100 caps milestone. His achievement stood unequalled for nearly 20 years. Billy was a pioneer… when he won his caps he was travelling alone into uncharted territory. Those other magnificent players who came later; Sir Bobby Charlton, Bobby Moore, Peter Shilton and David Beckham, all measured their own success against his.

In time the website may be developed into a lasting tribute to his achievements. For the present, it has been created simply to gather support for the proposal that this great man should be posthumously honoured with a knighthood for his fantastic achievements and services to football.

His unique contribution as a player and as a wonderful ambassador for the sport, in particular at a time of post-war depression, was exceptional beyond imagination. So profoundly outstanding was his career that I am sure that a posthumous knighthood would be globally welcomed by our nation’s footballing peers, football’s governing bodies, by every football fan, regardless of club loyalties, and by individuals throughout the United Kingdom and beyond. The Times newspaper described Billy as ‘a national treasure’.

English football already has some great men, who have received knighthoods; Sir Trevor Brooking, Sir Matt Busby, Sir Bobby Charlton, Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Tom Finney, Sir Geoff Hurst, Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Alf Ramsey, Sir Bobby Robson and Sir Walter Winterbottom. I am sure that all these men would agree that Billy Wright deserves his place amongst their ranks.

Billy was the symbol of English football around the world… a true icon. Although he was honoured in 1959 with a CBE, presented to him by Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace, it has been a long held view by many who were fortunate to have witnessed his skills, that he was worthy of a knighthood. There is a precedent for a posthumous knighthood too; the golfer Sir Henry Cotton was so honoured in 1988, after his death.

This year, 2009, it will have been 50 years since he retired from football. His final game for England was also played 50 years ago, on 28th May 1959. The match was played in Los Angeles, at Wrigley Field Stadium and Billy was captain. England defeated the USA 8 – 1.

Billy Wright CBE – 105 Caps for England.

THE PROPOSAL is that Billy Wright CBE should be honoured with a Posthumous Knighthood. Support for this proposal has been received from Members of Parliament in London and Brussels, from Members of the House of Lords and from a number of football’s leaders worldwide.

On 21st April 2009, Professional Footballers’ Association chairman Gordon Taylor OBE said, “I am always delighted to see formal recognition given to great players and great people like Billy Wright. I knew him well and had the very highest regard for him. I would be happy to provide my support for a posthumous knighthood.”
