The medicines that could land you in jail in Dubai and Abu Dhabi

There are a few restrictions when travelling to the United Arab Emirates and if you don't abide by the entry requirements, you could land yourself in big trouble.

Although it doesn't stop the 1.5 million British nationals that visit the UAE every year, which includes cities Dubai and Abu Dhabi, there are some things to consider before you pack your suitcase.

Your passport needs to be valid for a minimum of six months before the date you enter the UAE and you'll also need a visitor's visa.

But another thing to consider is what medications you can take into the country.

The UK Foreign Office says: "There is zero tolerance for drugs-related offences" – which means that the penalty for the possession of drugs is severe.

Sentences for trafficking can include the death penalty and the possession of even the smallest amount of illegal drugs can lead to a minimum four-year jail sentence.

The Emirati authorities count the presence of drugs in the blood stream as possession.

The Foreign Office updated their travel advice on September 16 to include CBD oil and E-cigarettes.

They said: "Some skincare products and E-cigarette refills may contain ingredients that are illegal in the UAE such as CBD oil.

"If found in possession of such products, they will be confiscated and you may face criminal charges."

Can you take prescription drugs?

The UAE advice says the following: "Individuals may bring medicine into the country for their personal use.

"Up to three months' supply of a prescription item can be brought into the country by a visitor and 12 months' supply by a resident if they can produce a doctor's letter or a copy of the original prescription."

However you must check that your prescribed medicine in the UK is not restricted in the UAE before travelling.

Even if your medicine is legal in the UAE, it must be restricted to the maximum of three months if you're a vistIor.
