Surreal Symbolic Intuitive Images.
Fish 3, 30" x 30", Acrylic on Gallery Wrap Canvas, Limited Edition Prints Available. As per the title, this is the 3rd in a series. Although fish are the dominant theme, each painting contains images and symbols representing my current interests. The design of this painting began with the idea of the tree stump floating in the air. It directly relates to Fish 2 ,in which the emblem of the city of Glasgow floats in the air- a robust oak tree on top of a giant fish,( to which I added various elements.) In Fish 3, the tree has developed…
Heart of the Forest.
Heart of the Forest, 18" x 24", acrylic on gallery wrap canvas, SOLD. Limited Edition Prints available. One day, in search of inspiration, I was looking at the work of Max Ernst. I particularly admire his method of outlining the edges of forms with light as well as his fantastic and complex imagery. I came across a reference to a piece called ‘The Heart of the Forest’, with no accompanying illustration; and, being struck by the poetic nature of the phrase, I decided to take it out of context and come up with my own interpretation. (I still have not…
The Awakening.
The Awakening, image size 15" x 19 1/2", framed size 23" x 27" under Plexiglas, acrylic on board. SOLD – Limited edition prints available. Sometimes I engage in a thought exercise, in which I meditate on a known image or experiment with different ways to portray a specific part of an image, combining one aspect with new elements. This painting is a result of that type of exercise. I started with the image of Jacob Bryants 1774 rendition of the ‘Orphic Egg’. This iconic image has been used for many modern illustrative purposes. It is a drawing of a long…
Humanity; It’s Not Always About You.
Mixed media drawing on pastel paper, Framed size 24″ x 27″, white mat, copper metal frame. SOLD. This mixed media drawing is made with oil pastels and colored pencils on pastel paper. I designed it specifically for the show ‘Valley View’ in April/May of 2014 at Stellar Gallery, in which it was exhibited. The theme was ‘trails currents and visions’, with the focus on Yosemite Valley and the lands protected by the 1864 Grant Act, and influences beyond the Park boundary. During the government shutdown of Dec. 95-Jan. 96, I was living and working in the Park, and it was…
Immortality Lounge.
Acrylic on Gallery Wrap Canvas, 24" x 30", Limited Edition Prints Available The abstract vaguely feminine egg shaped design which frames the center egg is based on a Maltese dish from Hal Saflieni hypogeum (underground temple, tomb), and has been dated to 3000 B.C.E. Ceramic figurines found at the same site provided the impetus for the concept of the main figure in the drawing, the fish on the couch. Archaeologist Marija Gimbutas, in her book ‘Civilizations of the Goddess’, writes; "…figurines of ‘sleeping ladies’ lying stretched out on low couches…why is she sleeping in the tomb? One explanation is that…
Elephant Family.
Acrylic on Gallery Wrap Canvas, 24" x 30" This painting includes large amounts of polyester glitter and some metallic highlights. It is an experiment in color and freehand drawing loosely based on reference photos, with an accent on abstraction into broad areas of color. Elephants are fascinating, exotic, matriarchal, and endangered. The background animals are inspired by pre-historic cave drawings. The medieval style sun personifies the landscape. This painting was part of the show "The Gathering" at Stellar Gallery in Oakhurst, 2013.
