Safe to take Viagra while TTC?
I was reading that studies show Viagra may (or definitely does?)
damage a male’s fertility. I’m now freaking out because my husband took 1/2 a Viagra last cycle before BD. I told him not to take any more.
Does anyone know anything about this, from a doctor or from research, etc.? Does Viagra indeed damage a man’s fertility, and if so, to what extent and is it permanent?
I know I’m probably overreacting, but if anyone has any information, that’d be great. I’m not sure if I’m quite ready to call my OB to ask about this. 🙂

I don’t know the answer to this, you should find Viagras official website. They will either answer you in the FAQ’s or email them to ask. I can’t imagine a half tablet would do much if anything to his fertility, unless he uses it a lot. Good luck, and update if you get your answer.

I would ask your doctor. Surely, the doctor that prescribed the viagra would know if it was safe to use while ttc.
After 6 years of infertility our IVF miracle arrived!
I’d be interested to know this too. when we were going thru our original infertility testing, the urologist gave DH (dear husband) some samples because he’s often unable to finish the deed, and the urologist knew we were TTC. That’s why we were there in the first place. Also the urologist said he had babies due to IVF, so I’m assuming that he would know something about infertility. BUT who knows.
TTC since July 2010 : MFI.

We use it occasionally and have never seen a negative effect on SA’s. we have had 5 SA’s. In our situation, I would be more concerned about dh (dear husband) not being able to get it up during O!

IVF #1 – 2 5AB blasts transferred – BFN.
FET #1 – 1 4BB blast transferred – CP.
I would assume the effects are cumulative, not immediate. So I doubt your cycle failed last month because of 1/2 a pill. And like most medication stopping the meds would likely increase fertility again.
I would definitely email the makers of Viagra and talk to your doctor about it. I’m not sure your obgyn would be the best resource since they’re generally not up to date on infertility, but it’s a good place to start! Good luck! 🙂

I like doing research and found this while I was looking. Your best bet would be to either ask the doctor who prescribed it, or look on the FDA website. If Pfizer hasn’t studied ttc while using viagra, they won’t be able to give you an answer. If there is no FDA indication for use of viagra during ttc, Pfizer will not be able to give you an answer either.
Seems like a downer, sorry, but it’s a huge legal issue for a company to give you an answer to a question if the drug is being used off label.
According to epocrates, viagra is a category B drug so, something to use if the benefits outweigh the risks.

2 rounds of clomid, 3 IUI’s, and 2 rounds of IVF brought us a little boy!
I’ll let you know if I find out any information. I just found a few articles online that say that it reduces/impairs fertility. TCOYF mentions this issue very briefly, too. I don’t want to go out of my way to research more cuz I think it’ll just add to my anxiety.
Actually this cycle isn’t even over yet, so KMFX. 🙂
