Pfizer May Face Viagra Melanoma Lawsuits Next Year.
December 9, 2014.
In the wake of a recent Viagra study published earlier this year, many consumers of the erectile-enhancing drug have filed Viagra melanoma skin cancer lawsuits against drug maker Pfizer. It is expected that the first batch of these lawsuits will hit courtrooms soon, perhaps in early 2015.
The Viagra skin cancer study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) suggested a strong link between the sildenafil drug Viagra and higher than normal rates of melanoma skin cancer conditions among Viagra users.
Specifically, the study reported that consumers using Viagra are 84 percent more likely to develop skin cancer over a 10-year period than their counterparts who do not use Viagra or related sildenafil drugs.
While the JAMA research study has been a popular article within the medical community, many courts and legal representatives are skeptical of Viagra melanoma skin cancer claims. Some have even gone as far as to criticize the Viagra research study for allegedly only showing a correlation between the use of the Pfizer drug and the presence of skin cancer.
U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson, who is presiding over the Viagra multidistrict litigation, has also expressed concerns about the possibility of Viagra melanoma victim attorneys relying on the Viagra skin cancer report.
Judge Magnuson is also concerned about the reliability of Gerald McGwin, one of the authors of the report, as the main general causation expert for most of the Viagra melanoma lawsuits.
One of the legal representatives for many of the Viagra melanoma lawsuits has stated he is aware of the skepticism surrounding the causation element of the Viagra skin cancer research study, but is confident that the sheer number of participants in the study, as well as the fact that the research was performed over a 10 year period, makes the use of this study an “impressive and significant and very important piece of medical information.”
Once these Viagra melanoma lawsuits begin to hit various federal and state courts, the usefulness of the Viagra skin cancer study may become more apparent and will most likely determine the use of the research in future Viagra litigation.
Viagra Melanoma Skin Cancer Research.
The JAMA research study mention above was sponsored by Harvard and performed by researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health.
The research was based on data curated by Harvard over the course of 10 years and followed 26,000 male research participants, some of whom used Viagra on a regular basis.
The Harvard study was published in April and reported that 3,500 of the 26,000 men developed skin cancer allegedly caused by their use of Viagra. Of these 3,500 Viagra skin cancer patients, 142 specifically developed melanoma skin cancer, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
In order to account for other cancer factors, Harvard researchers looked at participants’ genetics, UV damage, and other risk factors.
Researchers allegedly found that these other cancer factors did not affect the findings of the study. This conclusion suggests an increased risk of developing skin cancer after taking Viagra or other erectile enhancing drugs containing sildenafil.
In light of this study and other consumer reports, hundreds of men may file Viagra skin cancer lawsuits or join Viagra skin cancer class action lawsuits.
