Um dia cheguei em casa e tive que encarar o fato do qual fugia há alguns meses:Â Rubem enlouquecera.
Segundo vizinhos, nossa cozinha fora reformada há mais de trinta anos pelo antigo morador, um senhor um tanto excêntrico que, na ocasião de um vazamento trocou o padrão de ladrilhos hidráulicos vermelhos e sextavados por um piso quadriculado preto-e-branco muito em moda naqueles tempos.
Mudamos para este apartamento há nove anos e Rubem sempre implicara com o desenho. Ora chamava-o de brega, ora dizia que o preto escurecia demais ou que o branco sujava, fato é que nos últimos meses a rejeição se agravou e ele passou a evitar a cozinha.
Inicialmente ficava por ali pouco tempo. Depois passou a entrar apenas para buscar algo rapidamente na geladeira. Se estava descalço, calçava meias. Uma vez fiz menção de comer um biscoito que caíra no chão e fui violentamente reprimida.
– Mas a dona Júlia esfregou tanto esse chão hoje!
– Não quero saber, não coma! Pode ser perigoso. Acho mesmo que a dona Júlia tem algo a ver com eles.
Mas antes que pudesse cobrar maiores explicações, ele já abrira o jornal e se divertia com alguma sessão de humor.
Particularmente, eu não achava aquele padrão quadriculado tão bonito. Era bastante kitsch, mas também não chegava a me incomodar. Recentemente pensei em substituí-lo por algo mais moderno como o piso branquinho, liso e brilhante da minha cunhada, ainda mais depois que Rubem arrastou a geladeira e o fogão para a sala e passara a cozinhar tranquilamente em frente à TV.
Mas não éramos afeitos a gastos desnecessários e eu tinha dificuldade em admitir que devesse fazer isso por Rubem. Temia que isso apenas incentivasse sua implicância. Mas temia também por nossa convivência e pelo casamento, que parecia afundar cada vez mais num cenário quadriculado.
Foi então que tive a idéia de readaptá-lo à cozinha, mas para isso deveria fazê-lo aceitar o piso. Primeiro comprei-lhe uma camisa branca com pequenos botões quadrados pretos, que ele usou com muito gosto em nosso aniversário de casamento. Depois decorei a sala com uma gravura emoldurada de um artista que pesquisei pela internet, famoso por suas composições geometrizadas. Representava animais nas extremidades que se fundiam até que o centro virasse um grande quadriculado claro e escuro.
– Moderninho esse quadro, não?!
– O artista é sueco, respondi.
E foi com desprezo que se referiu uma única vez ao meu esforço.
E assim seguia, cada vez mais obcecada em fazer Rubem aceitar o preto, o branco e o quadriculado. Todos os dias chegava em casa com uma informação nova, um vestido quadriculado sobre o qual lhe pedia opinião, cubos de empilhar para crianças com os quais montava composições e deixava sobre as estantes, roupas de cama quadriculadas, potinhos, caixinhas, enfeites bicolores, um tabuleiro de xadrez – e com isso passamos a jogar todas as noites – uma toalha quadriculada com a qual fizemos um piquenique e convidamos nossos sobrinhos…
Rubem tornara-se pouco a pouco mais participativo e nosso casamento melhorara vertiginosamente. Voltara a freqí¼entar a cozinha, de meias, e até concordara em transportar a geladeira de volta, na condição de mantermos o fogão na sala.
– À que a geladeira é coisa rápida. Já no fogão demoramos mais tempo, tem que cozinhar…
Sentia-me muito feliz. Não raro cozinhávamos juntos na sala e já não discutíamos mais por bobagens. Confesso que foi com certo alívio que me desapeguei das tarefas domésticas e declarei independência da cozinha. Dona Júlia agora reinava ali absoluta ” lavava a louça, o piso, as paredes e nem me perguntava mais onde guardar cada coisa. Com olhos indulgentes fui vendo meus talheres de prata fritarem bifes e a porcelana que ganhamos no casamento abrigar o alimento do gato.
Certa madrugada estranhei a demora de Rubem, que estava com sede e saíra da cama para buscar um copo d”água. Estava no começo do corredor e equilibrava-se sobre a soleira da cozinha. Os olhos sonolentos estavam esbugalhados, evidenciados pela claridade da lâmpada fluorescente.
Parei ao seu lado e olhei. Primeiro vi um quadrado preto, em seguida um branco, depois outro preto… e o quadriculado foi se tornando um pano de fundo infinito a me ameaçar, a me engolir…
No dia seguinte telefonei para o pedreiro. Mandei quebrar tudo e substituir por um piso branquinho, liso e brilhante, como o da minha cunhada.
