How Does Viagra (Sildenafil) compare to MUSE (Intraurethral alprostadil)? Erectile Dysfunction (ED) Care, Viagra Plus Muse.

Viagra Pills vs Intraurethral MUSE for Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction in Men

What is MUSE?

The active compound in MUSE is alprostadil, a prescription medication that expands blood vessels and increases blood flow in the body, including the penis, thus helping men with erectile dysfunction to achieve an erection. Tiny alprostadil pill can be inserted into the “pee hole” at the tip of the penis.

What is Easier to Use Viagra or MUSE?

Compared to MUSE, Viagra is definitely easier to use – after all, it’s as simple as popping a pill. Inserting MUSE pill, called a ‘suppository’ is simple but a little more involved as it involves putting it in the ‘pee hole’. Most men are OK doing it after a few tries.

What Works Better intraurethral MUSE or Viagra?

In general, Viagra works for more men. Overall, Viagra works for about 70% of men. MUSE is effective in 30-40% of men with ED. MUSE takes effect in 5-20 minutes and the erection lasts for about an hour or until ejaculation. Viagra works as soon as 30 minutes but usually men are advised to take it 1 hour before sex.

MUSE works for some men for whom Viagra does not work. In addition sometimes MUSE can be used as part of combination therapy with Viagra.

Erections obtained with MUSE are expected to last only about one hour.

Side Effects: Viagra vs MUSE

Viagra tends to have more side effects because it goes into your body. Some men have upset stomach, headaches or muscle pains with Viagra.

MUSE goes only inside the penis. As a result the side effects tend to be local – some men have burning or pain in the penis. Other than that side effects from MUSE (intraurethral alprostadil) are rare.

For men who experience side effects from Viagra and other oral medications, or cannot take Viagra because they take certain heart medications, MUSE may be a good option.

The Bottom Line: Sildenafil (Viagra) vs Intra-Urethral MUSE Suppository

Viagra is usually the preferred first treatment option for men with impotence. For men who experience side effects from Viagra or who do not like taking a pill, MUSE may be a good treatment option.

For men with erectile dysfunction for whom Viagra and other oral medications for ED do not work well, MUSE may be a good next step to consider. Sometimes when Viagra works 80%, combining it with MUSE can allow some men to get adequate erection with combination treatment.
