St. Peter’s School Curriculum includes Religion, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Music, Technology, Art, Physical Education and Spanish. The goal of the curriculum is to teach the skills and strategies needed for our students to become productive, literate Christian citizens, who serve, improve and enrich our society. As part of the Catholic Diocese of Charleston, we follow the same rigorous Curriculum guidelines of all Catholic schools in South Carolina. Please take the time to review the detailed Curriculum on the Diocesan website.
Music Program In Collaboration With The University Of South Carolina.
Our exceptional Music Program is provided in partnership with the University of South Carolina School of Music. It is under the direction of Dr. Wendy Valerio, Associate Professor of Music Education at USC. Graduate students from the Music Education Department teach musical appreciation and expression through weekly general music instruction.
A rich education in music is important to a student’s overall academic development. Research has shown the benefits of music education include: improved reading and reasoning skills, improved mathematical skills, and improved self-esteem.
To show what they’ve learned, all students at St. Peter’s Catholic School perform in the December Christmas Concert. Parents, grandparents, and friends of St. Peter’s School are all cordially invited to attend. These and other school events are posted on this website.
To expand on our well-designed music curriculum, St. Peter’s Catholic School offers after-school instruction in piano and voice. Capella Pueri, Latin for “Children’s Choir,” is the student choir at St. Peter’s Catholic School. Whether Bach, Pergolesi, Mozart, Billings, Rutter, or well-known spirituals, the children sing their lively faith with a truly joyful sound. The Capella has performed in major productions like Carolina Ballet’s “Nutcracker” and local events like “Vista Lights.” Capella Pueri is directed by the Director of Liturgy and Music at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. In the words of St. Augustine, “He who sings, prays twice.”
Innovative Physical Education Programs.
Strength and Movement Class.
Strength and Movement is an innovative program offered every fall as St. Peter’s School’s PE program. It mixes aerobic dance with muscle-building exercises, balance, body awareness and stretching. The program is offered at the Columbia Conservatory of Dance, just two blocks from St. Peter’s. A challenging PE program, Strength and Movement, also develops an appreciation for the art of dance. First through sixth grades participate.
The faculty includes distinguished dancers from such world-renowned companies as American Ballet Theater, The Joffrey Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, and the New York City Ballet. The Columbia Conservatory of Dance received the Free Times “Best of Columbia” award for area dance schools in 2013.
In spring of 2014, the new Physical and Emotional Health Program began. It is team taught by Dr. Rachel Brown, family physician, and Mr. David Cowan, Coach and certified Youth Fitness Specialist with the International Youth Conditioning Association. The physical activity in the program optimizes motor skills, balance, coordination, strength, agility and speed. The program’s health education includes basic nutrition, proper sleep, muscle and bone health, safety issues, and good hygiene. Sessions also stress sportsmanship, personal responsibility, and teamwork as life skills needed for success.
Financial Literacy For Students.
The Junior Achievement Program, usually offered in the second half of the school year, is taught by local business professionals and aims to instill in our students the practical knowledge needed for economic success. It fosters work-readiness and a basic understanding of free enterprise and entrepreneurship. It uses experiential learning to develop the financial literacy students need to thrive in the 21st century global marketplace.
