Cultural activities in Malta comes under many forms. Amongst these the Malta International Choir Festival is one of several leading events that are entirely organised by the Ministry for Tourism and the Malta Tourism Authority. These have chosen the following members to form the Festival Organising Committee.
Malta International Choir Festival Committee Members.
Christopher Muscat.
First prize winner of the Joyce Dixey (2000, UK), the Jaume Dotras Serrabella (2006, Spain) and the APS Bank (2012, Malta) composition competitions, Christopher Muscat studied composition and conducting at the Universities of Malta and Surrey, where he earned his Master of Music degree with distinction. His compositions have been performed in many important European centres including the prestigious Berliner Philharmonie.
As a conductor, Muscat regularly conducts ensembles and orchestras in Malta and abroad and is equally at home in both the standard and the contemporary repertoires. Christopher Muscat has been a visiting lecturer in music at the University of Malta since 2003 and was invited to sit as juror on various national and international music competitions. He is also very much involved in the field of sacred music and is the Music Director of the Jubilate Deo Choir.
Rev. John Galea.
Rev. John Galea received his musical education at the Seminary and later with private tutors. He attended Master classes in orchestral practice and conducting in Vienna and at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena. Between 1965 and 2000, he directed the St Julian’s Choir. In 1990 he was nominated Musical Director of the Cappella Diacono whose main activity is the performance of the liturgical music composed by Carlo Diacono.
Between 1993 and 2000 he served as Maestro di Cappella of the Metropolitan Cathedral and set up the Cappella Cathedralis choir to perform during the principal liturgical feasts at Mdina Cathedral and St John’s Co-Cathedral. During these last years he was entrusted with the APS Bank project for the realization, editing and performance of religious music by Maltese composers, which was also published on a CD.
For many years Mro. John Galea has served as Organising Committee member and artistic director of the Malta International Choir Festival that is organised by the Ministry for Tourism and the Malta Tourism Authority.
Martin Morana.
Martin Morana has been an active committee member for 10 edtions of the with the Malta International Choir Festival, mostly involved in the administrative and logistical side of things.
He graduated in History at the University of Malta, and holds a tourist guide licence in five languages. He has been working with the Malta Tourism Authority for 27 years, of which the last 17 he has been administrator and committee member in more than sixty different events, some of which some were organised on a National scale. He was also the prime ideator of various events, such as the introduction into Malta of the Malta Military Tattoo and the Mediterranean Food Festival.
Martin is the author of three books on the history of colloquial Maltese words and idioms. He has also contributed numerous articles about Maltese history, in various periodicals.
Gabija Jenciute.
Gabija Jenciute was born and grew up in Klaipeda, a seaport in Lithuania, where she attended Vytautas Magnum Gymnasium – the highly prestigious and historical High School in Klaipeda, Lithuania that has a profound history and is highly respected in Lithuania.
She successfully graduated from the Juozas Karosas School of Music and received a Diploma with Honour of Piano. Gabija was awarded a Bachelor degree in Theatre Directing for which she had studied in Klaipeda as well as in Plymouth, UK. Following her studies, Gabija immediately decided to put her studies to practice and so she travelled to Malta to work in the organization of major events and festivals. This is where she quickly had to adapt her skills to the complicated operations of entertainment. Already, she has been involved in a good number of events that are organized locally by the Malta Tourism Authority and also the Arts Council of Malta. Gabija has been and still is involved in numerous working committees, such as those in charge of the annual Isle of MTV concert, the Malta International Fireworks Festival, Notte Bianca and the Malta International Choir Festival.
